Missouri Safe Sleep in Hospitals
This initiative promoted safe sleep in health care settings. Participants developed an AAP-based policy, trained staff, educated families, and more.
Overview
Initiative Overview
Unsafe sleep circumstances are the primary cause of infant deaths within the first year, constituting 81% of nonmedical-related fatalities. While sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) rates have stabilized, sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) during sleep, such as suffocation and entrapment, have risen. These deaths are largely preventable.
This initiative focused on the foundational elements of a standard of care for safe sleep in health care settings. Key components included developing an AAP-based policy, standardized training for health care workers, educating families, promoting safe sleep information on the hospital’s website, and using images depicting safe sleep environments.
The Missouri Perinatal Quality Collaborative and Missouri Hospital Association, with subject matter expertise from Nurture KC, evaluated the circumstances and demographics of unsafe sleep in Missouri and offered guidance to support reduction of SIDS/SUID in Missouri.
